My Bullshit List: A Notebook to Release your Bullshit everydayThere comes a time in every Indie-author ‘s life when you are going to have to create a print edition of a book or you just want to create a stand alone print book. The following is a quick guide on how to use Createspace to create and self-publish a print book.

What is Createspace?

Createspace is a print-on-demand platform to make and distribute your books, CD’s and DVD’s.

According to the Createspace website:

Through our services, you can sell books, CDs, and DVDs for a fraction of the cost of traditional manufacturing, while maintaining more control over your materials. We make it simple to distribute your books, music, and video through Internet retail outlets, your own website, and other bookstores, retailers, libraries, and academic institutions. Get started today!

CreateSpace is a DBA of On-Demand Publishing LLC, part of the Amazon group of companies.

What you need?

  • Book Title
  • Book Subtitle
  • Your book file in a PDF
  • Your Book Cover PDF (front and back)

All your books information can be uploaded in stages and you can skip to a particular part if you don’t have certain things ready.

Important: Once you approve your book you wont be able to change the title and sub-title unless you contact the Createspace people so make sure you get all these details right to begin with.

Step 1. Create your Createspace Account or use current Amazon Account Login

If you already have a Kindle Book and want to create the print book, use the same login. Createspace is part of Amazon so an Amazon login will also get you in.

Step 2. Member Dashboard

The Member Dashboard is where all your projects (books) will be displayed. The Dashboard also lets you know what stage each book is up to and any action that needs to be taken.

Step 3. Click Add New Title

You need to finish a set-up of a book to get it submitted for approval to Createspace. They will check if the file is sized well and they will even fix some problems for you. You need to complete the following information to get to this stage Title, ISBN, Interior & Cover.

Step 4. Select your choice of ISBN (FREE from Createspace or provide your own)

Step 5. Choose your Book Size, paper color and type color (the trickiest Part)

Book Size

If you are formatting the interior file yourself this will be the trickiest part depending on the size you choose. In the Interior Viewer you will see if the PDF is all off and it will give a choice to resize the whole thing to fit. I recommend Adobe Acrobat because you can edit PDF’s with it and insert blank pages where you don’t want the book to be double sided. It also had a feature where you can rearrange PDF pages. Basically it will make your life bearable during this process. After much trial and error and you are happy with the look of the interior go to the next stage.

Step 6. Choose a finish for your cover and Upload the Book Cover File.

CreatespaceYour book cover file needs to be the front and back like so:

Important: Make sure the book cover is 300DPI and a High Print Quality PDF. Or else it wont print clearly. If you are hiring a designer they should do all this for you.

Step 7. Submit File for Createspace Approval

Step 8. Order Proof Copies or Digitally Approve Proof Copy

Once Createspace approves your book in 24 Hours and all issues have been fixed. Your book is ready to be ordered and approved by you. You don’t have to actually physically get the book to approve it, you can digitally approve it. Createspace will show you what the finished product will look like online but I recommend ordering a few copies to look at as its easy to miss things like page numbering ect.

Step 9. Choose your Distribution, Pricing, category, key words and upload a sales description.

Next is all the nitty gritty things that will help sell your book. These things will take time and lots of research but your print book is now ready and approved!! Yay! Once you have completed all the steps your book will be live on Amazon and you can send the link to all your friends and family. Make sure you get everyone to leave a review for you.

This was a simplified version of the process but with each book I have found I’m allot faster and learning how to fix problems and issues. Here’s the notebook mentioned in this post:
